Taquiela Wright’s career trajectory took an unexpected turn from engineering to fashion following a series of personal hardships. “I was going through a divorce and healing from a severe illness when my mother passed away in 2020,” she shares. “It was blow after blow, and I needed something to pick me up.” During the COVID-19 lockdown, Wright turned to sketching and found solace in creating lingerie designs. “Delisa Rose was born out of a need to feel empowered and to channel my creativity into something meaningful,” she explains. Wright’s engineering background has profoundly influenced her approach to lingerie design. “The engineering experience helped me understand production and materials,” she says. “With 24 years in manufacturing, I had a solid grasp of supply chains and material specifications.” This knowledge has been pivotal in ensuring that her designs not only look luxurious but also fit impeccably. “I focus on the form and fit of the garment first before considering its visual appeal,” she adds.
Wright’s latest collection, the Fantasy Collection, recently debuted at Paris Fashion Week. “I wanted the collection to feel like a fantasy, something that girls could dream about and achieve,” she says. The collection features vibrant colors, intricate embroidery, and luxurious laces, reflecting her artistic evolution. “I incorporated elements that speak to the European market and added sparkles and diamonds to enhance the fantasy feel,” she elaborates.
Despite a smooth start, Wright faced challenges as the collection neared completion. “We encountered issues with garment sizes and delays in production,” she reveals. “I had to rework some pieces and adjust timelines to ensure quality.” These obstacles were overcome through meticulous planning and adjustments, demonstrating Wright’s resilience and commitment to her craft. Wright’s vision for Delisa Rose extends beyond aesthetics. “I want women to feel empowered and confident in my lingerie,” she says. “It’s about making them feel beautiful and worthy, no matter what they’re going through.” The brand’s essence is about empowerment and self-love, offering designs that can be worn with pride both inside and outside the bedroom..
As Delisa Rose continues to gain momentum, Wright has exciting plans for the future. “I’m looking forward to hosting pop-ups and possibly collaborating with other brands,” she reveals. “I also want to explore opportunities in brick-and-mortar stores, but I’ll start with collaborations first.” Wright manages to juggle multiple roles, from fashion design to engineering and more.
“If you can multitask and handle it without getting stressed, go for it,” she advises. “Focus on high-priority tasks and take breaks to avoid burnout. Will Smith’s advice about focusing on one thing works for some, but for me, multitasking is essential.”
Wright’s success serves as an inspiration to aspiring entrepreneurs, especially women. “Women are powerful and can achieve greatness in any field,” she asserts. “I hope to be a role model for my nieces and nephews, showing them that they too can pursue their dreams.” Taquiela Wright’s journey from aerospace to fashion is a testament to her resilience and creativity.
