Hale’s journey into the arts began at the tender age of five, inspired by Whitney Houston’s iconic rendition of the national anthem at the Super Bowl. “I just watched her and thought, ‘I want to do that,’” she recalls. Singing in church choirs as a child laid the foundation for her musical career, which has since seen her perform at major events for the Dodgers, Lakers, and more. “That moment ignited a fire in me,” Hale reflects, highlighting the importance of representation in the arts. As a multi-talented artist, Hale faces the challenge of time management.

“I can’t do everything at once,” she admits. Whether focusing on music, acting, or activism, she recognizes the necessity of prioritization. “It’s okay to say no to certain things,” she advises, underscoring the importance of maintaining a healthy balance and avoiding burnout.

Hale’s music, often centered on themes of empowerment and social justice, stems from her upbringing in a progressive Christian environment. “Music is a universal language,” she explains, using it as a tool to amplify messages about mental health, LGBTQ+ rights, and racial justice. “If you can use music to reach people, it might get them to listen better,” she says passionately.

Hale’s activism took shape in the wake of Trayvon Martin’s tragic death, awakening her to the realities of racial injustice. This realization deepened as she became involved with the Black Lives Matter movement. “My faith and activism go hand in hand,” she shares, noting the strong emphasis on social justice within her church community. One of her significant initiatives is the Black Voices Heard project, launched after George Floyd’s death. Inspired by Humans of New York, Hale aims to share authentic narratives from the Black community to challenge stereotypes and foster understanding. “If people hear our experiences, it can break down misconceptions,” she asserts, highlighting the project's potential to spark vital conversations.

As a mother, Hale is acutely aware of the challenges of juggling her various roles. “It’s by the grace of God,” she says of her ability to balance her activism, music, and acting with family life. She emphasizes the importance of being present for her children and husband, often taking breaks from her phone to focus on her family. “I’m still learning how to balance,” she admits, but her faith helps guide her. Hale’s biracial marriage adds another layer to her understanding of race and identity. “I was Black before I knew him,” she states emphatically, asserting that her commitment to advocacy for the Black community remains unchanged. “My husband is aligned with my views on race,” she adds, illustrating the importance of shared values in their relationship.

Exciting projects loom on Hale’s horizon, including her directorial debut with the film Curtain Call, which is making its rounds in film festivals. She also anticipates the release of her upcoming film, Bull Street, which will soon be available for streaming. “I’m grateful for these opportunities,” she says, reflecting on her journey in the entertainment industry.

Hale’s podcast, We Need to Talk, which began as a live panel series in her church, further exemplifies her commitment to facilitating difficult conversations around social justice. “People were really surprised by these discussions,” she recalls, noting how they’ve helped her and others grow. In a world where negativity often prevails, Hale reminds us of a simple yet profound truth: “It doesn’t take effort to be kind.” She believes that kindness should be a guiding principle for all, echoing the golden rule of treating others as one wishes to be treated. “Adults need to be reminded of that often,” she concludes, a sentiment that resonates deeply in today’s climate.

Malynda Hale’s multifaceted journey exemplifies the power of art, faith, and activism to create meaningful change. As she navigates the complexities of motherhood and her career, her unwavering commitment to her community serves as an inspiration for many. With her eyes set on the future, Hale continues to be a beacon of hope and a catalyst for progress in the cultural and political landscape.
